02 November 2011, ADDIS ABABA – The 16th International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA 2011)
Theme and Objectives
ICASA 2011 Theme
Own, Scale-up and Sustain
ICASA 2011 – Objectives
• Serve as an advocacy platform to mobilize African leaders, partners and the communities to increase ownership, commitment and support to the response.
• Provide a forum for exchange of knowledge, skills and consolidation of experiences and best practices in Africa and around the globe to scale up evidence-based response on HIV/AIDS/STIs, TB and Malaria to achieve the MDGs.
• Use as a forum to link and hold accountable political and national leaders, the scientific community, practitioners, communities, civil societies, the private sector and partners to scale-up and sustain the response.
• Create opportunities to define priorities and set policy and program agenda to enhance mobilization and effective utilization of resources.
ICASA 2011 - Theme
• Owning encompasses playing the lead role in HIV/AIDS and STI prevention, treatment, care and support at policy, strategy, programs, implementation as well as M&E levels by the primary stakeholders.
• Due to the current global financial and economic crises, HIV and AIDS programs are facing funding challenges. Such challenges may entail a sliding back from what has been gained thus far in Africa with respect to containing the pandemic, and mitigating its impacts. Therefore the theme is an alert call and an attempt to draw attention to the urgent need to sustain.
• Since there is huge gaps in prevention, treatment, care and support, sustaining what has been achieved is not enough. Therefore, we cannot think of sustaining without enhancing scaling up of all responses in order to address the critical gaps.
