TALKREPORT

Executive Summary
The media play a central role in modern societies because they represent a primary source of information and are a main provider of entertainment for large numbers of people. As a result, the media make a decisive impact on the political, economic, social and cultural activities of people and institutions, bringing about new behavioral and cultural patterns as well as, help to shape individual opinion, notions and beliefs.
The NYMC Summit is in response to a recent as well as major public demand; in search for good governance in institutions, agencies, private and public corporations.
In many countries today, especially in democratic dispensation, the media plays a key and major role in promoting good governance in the society.
This project is aimed at helping young people in the Media attain professional standards and practices at the managerial, editorial, production and programming levels.

BREAKING NEWS
PASTOR TUNDE BAKARE REACT ON MILITARY MEN INVADING THE SNG PROTEST GROUND @ OJOTA,OBALENDE

The Save Nigeria Group(SNG) and it's allies flay the deployment of troops and tanks to the Gani Fawehimi Fredom Square at Ojota,Lagos, which has hosted our peaceful and popular protests for five days running last week.

To the credit of the organizers of the protests and the maturity of the millions of Nigeria who have trooped to the rally ground, we have had violence free gatherings for days with great comportment and no loss of life, damage to property or violation of any law of the land.

It is therefore curious that a democratic government would deploy military tanks and troops against such a peaceful assembly of the people in clear violation of the constitutionally guaranteed right of the citizens to freely assemble and express their feelings.

This is a clear case of intolerance and shutting of the democratic space against the people of Nigeria which must be condemned by all democracy loving people around the world.
We have equally reviewed the broadcast of President Goodluck Jonathan where he unilaterally offered to reduce the pump price of petrol to N97 per litre.

This tokenism shows that the display of people power in the last few days has not been in vain but it is far little to be acceptable.

We demand a reversal to the pre-Jan 1 pump price of N65 per litre as a basis for a conducive atmosphere for a national conversation on the oil sector and how to deal with the corruption that has brought this needless crisis on the 7th largest producer of crude in the world that has been made to depend on import for it's refined product consumption.

In the meantime,we ask our people who have made tremendous sacrifices in the last few days to comply with the stay-at-home directive as a continuation of this mass action and await further directives.

We salute the resilience of our people who have demonstrated that they have all it takes to fight for their rights on a sustained basis in the most peaceful manner to the chagrin of their adversaries .
The seed of permanent change had been sown in our land and it would germinate and bear the fruits of freedom.

God bless the people of Nigeria!
Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria!!

Pastor Tunde Bakare.
Convener,SNG.

DAY 6 OCCUPYLAGOS ARMED MILITARY MEN INVADE GANI FAWEHINMI PARK OJOTA LAGOS STATE NIGERA

President Goodluck Jonathan has deployed hundreds of gun-wielding soldiers on the streets of Lagos in a desperate bid to forestall peaceful protests scheduled to continue today.

Through reports filed by citizen reporters affiliated with Saharareporters it was gathered that the armed soldiers have taken positions in such spots as Ikeja, Ikoyi, Surulere and Ojota as well as other spots where thousand of Nigerians have poured out in protest the government sharp increase in price of petrol. About 16 check points and barricades have been been mounted around the Gani Fawehinmi Park in Ojota according to reports.

The deployment of soldiers comes on the heels of Mr. Jonathan's planned broadcast Monday morning in which he will announce the reduction of fuel prices to N97 a liter.

In the address, the text of which has already been published in full by Saharareporters, President Jonathan takes an unusually harsh tone towards the protesters.

In an interview moments ago, one of the leaders of the protest movement said that the protests have been held in peaceful atmosphere, but added that President Jonathan appears ready to use force against peace-loving Nigerians. They vowed to make an appearance at the venue today regardless of the presence of the soldiers. Seun Kuti, the son of Afrobeat maestro Fela Anikulapo-Kuti sent an sms to Saharareporters that he will be at the rally today.

A protest leader told SaharaReporters, "We want to make clear that President Jonathan would be held responsible for any casualty that results from his decision to unleash soldiers on unarmed and peaceful protesters who are merely demanding accountability and transparency from their leaders". He further noted that officers of the Nigerian police have so far killed about 20 protesters in different parts of the country, he vowed that Nigerians would never let the victims of police brutality die in vain"

Another protest leader expressed dismay and disappointment with the decision of trade union leaders to unilaterally call off street protests on account some purported security concerns.

He added that some of the in the movement had received speculations all week that the government was offering a variety of financial and other material inducement to labour leaders in order to compromise them.

He stated that, "it would be extremely hard for any compromised labour leader to hoodwink Nigerians who are now determined to seize the opportunity to question the greed as well as ineptitude other so-called leaders"

Nigerian Youth 11-11-11 Hunger Strike Against the Removal of Fuel
Subsidy

In the words of Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria “As a democracy, we are constantly reminded that we serve the people only at their pleasure. Thus, when the people feel strongly about an issue, we have had to thread the path of caution and return to drawing board of consultation” hence the need for us to speak out aloud.

Why will government set an irrevocable terminal date of January 2012 for the total removal of this so-called fuel subsidy? Why must it happen next year? Why can’t they put the necessary infrastructures in place i.e modern day refineries that can at least refine the fuel needed by Nigerians in before thinking of the removal of the subsidy?

They said when they remove the subsidy the will set up committee of eminent Nigerians to manage it, why can’t they set up the committee now to manage the subsidy.

It is a common saying that problem know is half solved, unlike Nigeria situation with our rulers, ‘’Problem known is to be suffered by every Nigerians except them’’, they said subsidy goes to the hand of few cabals, they can not mention the names of these cabal, if any, rather the Government is so weak and ineffective to checkmate the ‘’cabals’’ so they want us to pay for it?

What is the reasonable justification behind the removal of fuel subsidy while there is excess crude account?

Can the Government be trusted at all? Where is the Good governance they promised? Where is the adequate security for all that they promised? What have they practically done to fight corruption, what happen to the widely call for special court to handle economic and financial crime? What have they done with the recovered loot from Abacha, Tafa Balogun and others?

Enough is Enough; therefore, join us as NIGERIAN YOUTH WILL BE GOING ON HUNGER STRIKE ON 11-11-11 TO SAY NO TO THE REMOVAL OF FUEL SUBSIDY.

Theme and Objectives

ICASA 2011 Theme
Own, Scale-up and Sustain
ICASA 2011 – Objectives
• Serve as an advocacy platform to mobilize African leaders, partners and the communities to increase ownership, commitment and support to the response.
• Provide a forum for exchange of knowledge, skills and consolidation of experiences and best practices in Africa and around the globe to scale up evidence-based response on HIV/AIDS/STIs, TB and Malaria to achieve the MDGs.
• Use as a forum to link and hold accountable political and national leaders, the scientific community, practitioners, communities, civil societies, the private sector and partners to scale-up and sustain the response.
• Create opportunities to define priorities and set policy and program agenda to enhance mobilization and effective utilization of resources.
ICASA 2011 - Theme
• Owning encompasses playing the lead role in HIV/AIDS and STI prevention, treatment, care and support at policy, strategy, programs, implementation as well as M&E levels by the primary stakeholders.
• Due to the current global financial and economic crises, HIV and AIDS programs are facing funding challenges. Such challenges may entail a sliding back from what has been gained thus far in Africa with respect to containing the pandemic, and mitigating its impacts. Therefore the theme is an alert call and an attempt to draw attention to the urgent need to sustain.
• Since there is huge gaps in prevention, treatment, care and support, sustaining what has been achieved is not enough. Therefore, we cannot think of sustaining without enhancing scaling up of all responses in order to address the critical gaps.

King Abdullah II of Jordan Generations For Peace Scholarship

Am I eligible? What does it cover? How do I apply? How will I know if I've been successful?

Generations For Peace is an international non-governmental organisation founded in 2007 by HRH Prince Feisal Al Hussein of Jordan and dedicated to the innovative and sustainable use of sport for peace building and development, and currently supporting activities in 47 countries and territories worldwide.

In order to serve and support the sport for peace and development community, Generations For Peace has established the Generations For Peace Institute. Located in Al Hussein Youth City in Amman, Jordan, the Institute is a centre for research, best practices and training, serving the wider sport for peace and development community.

A key objective of the Institute is to expand its community of practice, establishing partnerships with universities, such as the University of Oxford, and providing scholarships and research grants to support study and research which contribute to the field of sport for peace and development. Research is therefore not limited to a focus on Generation For Peace’s own programmes, but may also relate to other sport for peace and development programmes, thereby making a broader contribution to the field.

The Generations For Peace Institute supports applied interdisciplinary research: to evaluate sport for peace and development programme impacts on both a macro and micro scale on individuals or communities; to inform the development of better practices in programme design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation; and to explore new innovation and new approaches (including leveraging new technologies).

The research studies should be grounded in cutting edge academic theory, but directed towards practice and a contribution towards real impact. Research might examine the short term and/or long term impact of different types of programmes on an individual’s or community’s self-awareness, self-esteem, psychology, attitude and behaviour, and how these changes have affected situations of conflict and/or their physical, economic and/or social well-being, including broader community development issues such as gender equality, domestic violence, youth crime, mental health, inclusion of persons with various forms of disabilities etc.

The research should reflect the aspirations of Generations For Peace to make a practical difference to programme work on the ground, and endeavour to provide a useful contribution to the learning of practitioners. Where possible, it is also extremely important that opportunities should be taken during the course of the research to build local research capacity and learning amongst local practitioners, perhaps in partnership with a local tertiary education institution.

The King Abdullah II of Jordan Generations For Peace Scholarship is to support a postgraduate student demonstrating exceptional academic merit and/or potential and intention to conduct research into sport for peace and development.

For more information about the work of Generations For Peace, see the Generations For Peace website.

Am I eligible?

You should be applying to start a new DPhil course, although in exceptional cases MPhil applicants may also be considered. This scholarship is not open to candidates applying for Postgraduate Certificate or Postgraduate Diploma courses.

Applicants to the scholarship must demonstrate an intention to conduct research into sport for peace and development, as outlined above. The programme of study could be based in the Medical Sciences, Social Sciences or Humanities Divisions.

Please ensure that you meet the requirements for entry to your course, including English language requirements. See the Course Guide for more information.

What does it cover?

100% of university and college fees, and a grant for living costs (rate to be confirmed). Some support may also be available for fieldwork expenses.

Awards are made for the full duration of a student's fee liability for the agreed course. If your scholarship is offered for a course lasting more than one year, the continuation of your scholarship each year is subject to an annual renewal process based upon satisfactory academic progress.

How do I apply?

Apply at the same time as you apply to Oxford by selecting King Abdullah II of Jordan Generations For Peace Scholarship in the Funding Section of the University's Graduate Application Form.

In order to be considered for this scholarship, you must submit your application for graduate study by the relevant January deadline (6 January 2012 for Medical Sciences and Philosophy; 20 January 2012 for all other subjects) and you must have secured a place on your chosen programme of study by the expected final decision date (17 March 2012). Applications with an outstanding admissions decision after this date, or applications which are re-evaluated against the later March deadline field, are not eligible for scholarship consideration.

If you do not meet the conditions outlined above, you will not be considered for the scholarship, even if you have selected Generations For Peace on the Graduate Application Form.

How will I know if I've been successful?

This webpage will be updated in May 2012 once successful candidates have been notified. If you have not heard from us by this time, then your application to this scheme has been unsuccessful. Due to the volume of applications we receive, we are unable to contact unsuccessful applicants individually or provide feedback on applications.
